When it comes to planning for the future, many of our students begin their journey long before they reach Sixth Form. This week, fifteen enthusiastic Year 10 students with aspirations in A‑level Science and STEM careers took part in a post‑16 STEM careers event hosted at New College Durham — and they certainly made their mark.
The group spent the day exploring hands‑on scientific and engineering experiences designed to give them a real taste of life beyond GCSEs. From the moment they arrived, their curiosity and enthusiasm shone through. They embraced every activity, including VR welding hosted by Dyer, and worked together to build pneumatic circuits, testing their problem‑solving skills in real time.
A highlight of the day was a talk and Q&A with SMS Technology, where students gained insight into cutting‑edge engineering and the skills needed in modern industry. They also discovered the world of civil engineering, trying out surveying techniques and learning how engineers help shape the world around us.
Throughout every session, our students were a credit to St John’s. Staff at the event were impressed by their maturity, engagement, and genuine passion for science. Most importantly, the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves — and many came away even more excited about the opportunities that studying Science at St John’s Sixth Form can offer.
These young people are deeply interested in how science works, how technology is advancing, and how they can be part of shaping the future. Their experience this week demonstrated exactly how a career in Science can begin right here at St John’s Sixth Form.
We are incredibly proud of our budding scientists — the future looks bright!
