On Wednesday 18th February, St John’s Sixth Form Computer Science and IT students had an inspiring opportunity to explore university life during a full‑day visit to Teesside University. Led by Mr Minton, a group of 22 Sixth Form students took part in two hands‑on workshops designed to deepen their understanding of cutting‑edge digital technologies.

Exploring AI and Cyber Security First‑Hand

The day began with an engaging session focused on Artificial Intelligence, where students explored real-world applications of AI and how the field continues to shape industries and careers. This was followed by a second practical workshop centred on Cyber Security, giving learners a chance to test their problem-solving skills and learn more about the growing importance of digital protection in modern society.

Both sessions offered students valuable insights into university-level learning, while showcasing just how much Teesside University has to offer through its specialist facilities and expert-led teaching.

Former St John’s Sixth Form Student Returns to Inspire

A highlight of the visit was a reunion between Mr Minton and Cory Wilson, a highly successful former St John’s Sixth Form student. Cory, now in his first year studying Optometry at Teesside University, previously studied Computer Science with Mr Minton during his time in Sixth Form.

Keen to support current learners, Cory spent the day working alongside St John’s students, offering guidance, sharing his experiences, and demonstrating how skills learned at St John’s can open doors to exciting university courses and future career pathways.

Positive Feedback From Students

The impact of the visit was clear, with students describing the workshops as both motivational and eye‑opening. One student shared:

“It was a great way to learn. The tasks were engaging and the facilities excellent.”

Opportunities like this play a key role in preparing St John’s Sixth Form students for the next stage of their academic journey, helping them build confidence, explore future pathways, and experience university life first-hand.
